July 2010 - Part 2
Bay of Islands Fishing Report
25th July - I've been doing a lot of scraping, grinding and sanding but this has not managed to get all the anti-foul off the hull. There is an area behind the keel cooling pipe that is very hard to get to, so on the recommendation of a couple I met in the yard I ordered some paint remover. According to the claims on the bottle, this "heavy duty" stripper will remove anti-foul and paint. After 5-10 mins you can then just wash it off with a strong hose.
The results were far from what was claimed. See this page for photos and a brief description of the problems it caused me.
It took me two days to clean up the mess and get the timber to a paintable surface. However the antifoul is still firmly attached.
27th July - Today, it is finally happening. First coats of paint are going on everywhere. We're still sanding as well but at least the areas being painted are starting to outnumber the areas being sanded. As well as that, Aaron turned up today with the canvas top. He fitted it temporarily, marked the areas where the smoke stack and air vents are going through and noted any other adjustments that are required. It was then removed and taken away to action the amendments.
28th July - Things are starting to come together. The hull now has two coats of undercoat, the Wheelhouse has it's first top coat and most of the rear cabin has some form of first or second undercoat. Plus - the biggie - the canvas is installed.
The boat is starting to look less like a bomb site and I'm starting to think that maybe, just maybe, we'll have everything done before the rain arrives again (touch wood)
It's Maintenance Time

Kerikeri Canvas have arrived for the first fitting of the canvas and the painting is starting to happen.

The canvas is installed and the new clears will arrive on Monday (then the canopy will be complete.) The hull is ready for it's first coat of anti-foul and the Wheel-house has it's first top coat.
