9th January - The main aim of this trip was an island visit and a bit of fishing. We set out at 10am to visit Roberton Island and were going to try and fit in as much fishing afterwards as we could within the allotted time. The swell was starting to build as we passed Tapeka but that was soon forgotten as we found ourselves right in the middle of a large pod of dolphins. They were frolicking under and beside the boat so we managed to get a really good look at these beautiful creatures. They seem to love getting their backs scratched by the boat as some of them were right under the bow. I didn't take any photos as everytime I try the dolphins seem to disappear. So, not wanting to tempt fate, I left it up to my customers who were well supplied with cameras. The best part is that we appear to be so close to the dolphins that you feel that you can just reach out and touch them if you wanted. Unlike the huge dolphin boats where the customer is well removed from the action. After about ten minutes we continued on to Roberton Island where everyone disembarked to check out the lookout and lagoons on this beautiful island. Unfortunately the lagoons were nearly empty because of the low tide but everyone managed to get a swim and have a good look around. It's so peaceful there that I will have to make a point of spending the day there sometime. Afterwards we had an hour and a half to try a bit of fishing. We stayed within the shelter of the islands and drifted in very calm waters. The fish here are plentiful but small. We managed a pannie for each person before the end of the trip.
While this was a disappointing catch in our opinion, we were talking to another operator afterwards and we were reassured that we had made the right decision. He was well out in the bay and had to endure a "Washing Machine" effect that resulted in all but one of his customers throwing up and he only got a single pannie between everyone.
