Bay of Islands Fishing Report

What a beautiful way to celebrate the new year.

Francis scored the best Snapper today along with this Porae
What's a day without a shark - Dylan is taking this one for his room

Francis was a bit reluctant to pose but we eventually got her to stop hiding behind her fish.

Dylan however was more than happy to pose with this shark that Alison caught. Apparently he's taking the head home to bury in the garden. The teeth are going to eventually adorn his bedroom wall.

4th January -
The forecast was for 10 knot Southerly turning to 15 knot Sou-Westerly winds at the end of the day. So while we were out there in 10-15 knot Nor-Easterly we once again marveled at the accuracy of the forecast. The adverts on the TV should read "if you want a good laugh and possibly put your life in danger, ring 0900 999 09 for the latest weather joke for only $1.30 a minute." Anyway back to the fishing. All I can say is the fish were on a diet today. We had huge pods of dolphins feeding all over the bay, gannets diving all around them, every sea bird you could think of going ballistic and nobody was catching much at all. We drifted under the birds, besides the birds, away from the birds, everywhere. All without success. Finally we crossed to the other side of the bay, dropped anchor at our best performing spot and still the snapper were not biting. So we once again, pulled anchor and chased the latest buildup of birds but again had no success. Our last try produced nothing. Our total catch between six customers produced two Snapper, one Porae and a 1.5 metre sand shark (caught by Alison). Admittedly, we saved everyone a fortune by having a combined dolphin trip (by default) and the shark provided heaps of fish fillets for everyone but we would have been a whole lot happier catching what we came for...Snapper.
