23rd January -
Light variable winds were forecast today so we were expecting calm water. However we discovered a slight swell when we arrived at the most likely spot to find fish today.
All the way out there was nothing on the fishfinder, so we were relieved to find a reef teeming with fish life. Unfortunately, it only took half an hour to come to the decision that Mao Mao ruled this reef so we left. We had a favourite spot within the islands that had been kind to us with a great supply of Trevally so we headed for it. We were joined by several dolphins who swam alongside for a while. There was a lot of excitement with 13 people hanging over the bow watching one dolphin who was having a great time playing in our bow wave for about five minutes. I never get tired of watching these magnificent creatures. We arrived at our destination, minus the dolphin. With zero swell, very very light winds and only 10m of water we thought that this would be perfect considering the large family group we had on board. Our decision to move seemed to pay off as we had a constant stream of fish coming aboard right from the start. Nothing spectacular but at least it was full on. The fish stopped biting suddenly around 1pm so we decide it was worth a try doing a bit of drift fishing on the way home. Unfortunately, although we drifted over large groups of fish they still didn't seem interested. Our tally for the day was 27 Snapper and one Trevally. Nothing over 34cm.
