Bay of Islands Fishing Report

1st January - What a beautiful way to celebrate the new year. Ten of us traveled out to the fishing grounds on one of the most beautiful days of the year. Unfortunately there was a bit of a swell still and the combination of wind and tide put us slightly side on to it. We dropped anchor at the first spot to try and minimise the effects but the fishing was so quiet that after an hour we decided to move. Our second choice of spots gave us shelter from the swell so we attempted a couple of drifts but we were off the choice spots in minutes so we had to drop anchor. It proved to be the best decision. As the day progressed we started catching better and better fish. Our last hour provided a lot of excitement with just about everyone getting a fish to be proud of. The largest was 5.5kgs, not huge but still pretty good. Mind you, the last fish of the day was a shark around 2 metres in length. We were able to battle him for about five minutes before he broke the line. Amazing strength these monsters have. A real buzz for the person who had him on their line.

Seasickness was quickly forgotten with this feisty Snapper
We had to work hard to convince these guys that the ledger rig was best for these conditions. However they ended the day converted to our way.

It was a slow start to the day but the excitement at the end of the trip more than made up for it. Here's a pretty good representation of the best fish of the day.

Our Next Trip was....
