13th January - We were surprised to observe that the swell had dropped so much, so instead of heading back amongst the islands we traveled out into the middle of the bay. We were able to drift but the small amount of fish appearing on the fishfinder just didn't seem to be interested. No one around us appeared to be having any luck either so we went to Plan B. Heading into the islands near Urapukapuka we had a spot in mind that might produce. We dropped the anchor in about 8 metres of water and immediately started pulling up fish. This was a huge improvement on our first spot but the snapper were very small. However we were soon pulling in huge numbers of Trevally so the excitement started to build. The weather was perfect, the water was dead calm and the fish were constant. After about two hours of this we had quite a few Trevally but not as much snapper as we wanted so we set off for the spot that had produced so well three days before. Alas, the snapper were not as prevalent as before and not as big. By the end of the day we had an adequate amount of fish but nothing startling.
